Barcelona… the city by the beach, where bare skin is an acceptable bathing suit, Gaudi amazes with nature-inspired architecture, dinner is eaten at 10pm and the party doesn’t start until well after midnight. Amongst the busy tourist-packed streets, you might find yourself concerned that there’s nothing but white-bread tapas and fried food in sight. Never fear! Barcelona has a beautiful hidden healthy-eating culture, if you know where to look.
Flax & Kale
For breakfast, lunch, dinner and every meal you have in Barcelona, you must go to Flax & Kale. It’s the only way to try everything on the menu… A Melbourne-style brunch hotspot, offering pressed juices, protein pancakes, acai bowls, salads and more in a huge airy, light-filled space. I recommend the tuna taco (incredible from the first bite), the pancakes and the superbowl salad. If you’re there for dinner, ask for a table in the elusive upstairs terrace – a stunning green oasis looking out over the lovely square. And please, promise me you will not leave without trying their turmeric mylk.
The woman who started the healthy-eating, plant-based revolution in Barcelona gives her name to her lovely restaurant not far from Placa de Catalunya. Here you can find a huge range of fresh food. You can even fill out an order form to build your ideal salad. I chose the kale salad and a pumpkin croquette for lunch when I was here. My liver thanked me, so did my taste buds. Beautiful food in a less hectic, more casual and cosy environment compared to sister restaurant, Flax & Kale.
